If you're looking for a Chicago family photo location that feels immersed in nature while still showcasing the iconic Chicago skyline, it's hard to beat Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk. Surrounding the scenic South Pond, this beautiful park offers an incredible variety of backdrops within a short walk.


Every fall, this becomes one of my favorite places for family sessions. Within just a short walk, we can photograph against the skyline, the boardwalk, native prairie, architectural landmarks, and beautiful fall foliage - all without ever feeling rushed.

Where to Park?


I usually recommend parking in the Lincoln Park Zoo parking lot or finding free street parking along N. Stockton Drive (when available). From either location, it's just a 3-5 minute walk to the Bridge Over South Pond, where you'll be rewarded with one of the most iconic views in the park - overlooking the Honeycomb, South Pond, and the Chicago skyline.


Local Tip: If your session falls on a Saturday morning during Green City Market (April–November, 7:00 AM–1:00 PM), expect heavier traffic and limited street parking along Stockton Drive. I recommend arriving a bit early or heading straight to the Lincoln Park Zoo parking garage for the easiest experience.

Our Favorite Route


We usually begin at the Lester E. Fisher Bridge overlooking South Pond (Google Maps: Bridge Over South Pond). It's one of my favorite viewpoints in Chicago, offering breathtaking views of the skyline and framed by the native prairie landscape of Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk.


From there, we'll make our way down to the iconic Peoples Gas Pavilion, better known as the Honeycomb. Designed by Chicago-based Studio Gang, its distinctive wooden architecture creates a uniquely Chicago backdrop while the surrounding boardwalk, prairie, and lush greenery provide beautiful natural settings, especially in the fall when the landscape comes alive with color. Occasionally, the Honeycomb is reserved for private events, but there are plenty of nearby spots that are just as beautiful.

Why I Especially Love it in the Fall



Many people come for the skyline, but I love this location just as much for its fall colors.


The trees around the bridge are often among the first to change, while the Honeycomb is surrounded by expansive native prairie and greenery that become especially beautiful throughout autumn. With water, skyline, architecture, and colorful landscapes all within a short walk, it's easy to create a gallery that feels varied and timeless.

Tips for Your Family Session


  • Wear comfortable walking shoes. We'll take a relaxed stroll between a few nearby photo spots.
  • Weekday evenings are generally quieter than weekends, making them a great choice if you're hoping for fewer people in the background.
  • Fall color develops gradually, so even if the trees haven't reached peak foliage, the combination of skyline, water, prairie, and greenery still photographs beautifully.
  • Kids usually love exploring the boardwalk, spotting turtles, birds, dragonflies, and other little discoveries along the pond. Those moments of curiosity often lead to the most genuine, joy-filled photographs.
